Facts about Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle Cell Disease patients -- often children -- can require up to 12 units of blood per month. These "frequent users" of transfused blood require "special blood properties" that make blood donors of their same ethnic background a critical piece of their continued health and comfort. In the case of chronically transfused patients, receiving blood from someone close to their ethnic background is imperative.

Spring welcomes new life: perfect time to donate blood, give patients renewed hope

Remaining cold weather will soon give way to extended daylight hours, awakening of budding trees and the beauty of floral landscapes. Carter BloodCare hopes these signs of new life will prompt residents to give a pint of life through the act of blood donation. Giving blood is one of the best ways to perform a random act of kindness for someone in need – potentially a patient struggling between life and death.

Hospitals have an ongoing requirement for blood; collectively, they fulfill 600 to 700 transfusion orders daily. As the community blood supplier, Carter BloodCare needs to see more than 1,000 blood donors a day to keep pace with demand.
