Winners announced: 15th Annual H-E-B Challenge blood drives

Ice cream party in store for participants at top-performing grocery stores

WACO, Texas (August 6, 2018) – It is a celebration of life for H-E-B and its employees who helped to save approximately 1,833 lives this summer. The grocery chain dedicated 16 days for blood drives in 23 stores in north and central Texas. They call it the H-E-B Challenge because employees in participating stores challenge each other to see which store can attract the most blood donos – and also which one can attract the greatest percentage of donors per store size.

One pint of donated blood can help save at least three lives. This year’s H-E-B Challenge resulted in 611 pints of lifesaving blood given for Carter BloodCare this summer, which is one of the most difficult times of year to encourage blood donation. Store employees compete for a traveling trophy and an ice cream sundae party.

This year’s winner for the highest number of blood donors seen is H-E-B Wooded Acres, where 73 pints donated meant saving 219 lives. Gatesville (at 56 pints) and Valley Mills (at 49 pints) also received nods for second and third place, respectively, for their communities’ incredible donor numbers.

Gatesville H-E-B store won the best participation award with a 59 percent participation rate, followed by Mexia and Ennis stores with 27 and 23 percent, respectively.

“H-E-B Grocery was the first corporate partner of Carter BloodCare when the blood program moved into central Texas in 2000,” said Vickie Carpenter, manager of Mobile Collections for Carter BloodCare in central Texas. “We are grateful for H-E-B’s dedication to blood donation. The company’s employees like to give back to their communities and they are willing to invite the citizens of their towns to give blood during a vitally important time of year.”

The real winners of the H-E-B Challenge blood drives are the patients in local communities who receive these gifts of life. Since there is no substitute for human blood, volunteer blood donors are an essential link to a patient’s healing process. The dates for the 2019 H-E-B Challenge will be June 22 – July 7.
